Abudelauri Lakes

The Abudelauri Lakes are located at an altitude of about 2,800 metres in the Khevsureti region, about 5 kilometres above the village of Roshka.

There are three lakes in total, in three different colours: green, turquoise blue and milky white. As all the lakes in Abudelauri are very high up, the water in the lakes is very cold even in July and August. However, the main attractions in Abudelauri are not only the lakes, but also the magnificent scenery and the rocky mountain of Chaukhi. This great mix of lakes, Rocky Mountains and rolling hills covered with green meadows makes Abudelauri a very special destination.

How to get to the Abudelauri Lakes

Unlike most mountain lakes, at least in Georgia, it is relatively easy to get to Abudelauri Lakes.

Option 1.

Take a public bus from Tbilisi in the direction of Shatili and get off at the turnoff to the village of Roshka. You have to walk the rest of the way to the lakes, or if you are lucky, you will get a lift to a certain point. From the turnoff to the lakes is about 15 kilometres.

Option 2.

Hire an off-road car, preferably with a local driver, and drive via Roschka to the turn-off for Archoti. From here it is about 3 kilometres with very little ascent to the lakes. It is not possible to drive to the Abudelauri Lakes by car.

Option 3.

If you are good on foot, you can also reach the lakes from the other side, via Dschuta and Chaukhi Pass (3,340 metres) or via Sadzele Pass (3,060 metres).

It is good to know that the third, milk-white coloured glacial lake is located slightly above two other lakes and it takes about half an hour to get around it.

Hiking around Lake Abudelauri

There are several options for hikers to explore the surrounding area from the lakes.

For example, you can walk over the Sadzele Pass (3,060 metres) or over the Chaukhi Pass (3,340 metres) to Dzshuta.

You can also hike from here to the nearby Archoti Valley or, if you want to go further, to Shatili or even Omalo.

Camping and accommodation at the Abudelauri Lakes

There is no accommodation directly on the lakes, but there are several family hotels 5 km south-east, in the village of Roshka.

In the high season, the good campsites at the Abudelauri Lakes are quickly taken, but you can still find a place, perhaps not right by the lake, but close by and with drinking water not too far away. Camping is still free at the Abudelauri Lakes.
