Itinerary
Wine tour in Kakheti starts quite early. We will pick you up at around 8:30 and drive to Signagi, it is a great city to start a Wine tour. Its architecture, cobblestone streets, location at top of a hill, with the snow-covered greater Caucasus in background, give the town a romantic look. Signagi has also a marriage chapel, which hosts ceremonies taking place all hours of the day and night. These are the reasons, why this small town is called “city of love”.
But before we go to Sighnaghi, we will visit one of Georgia's most important nunneries at Bodbe, where St Nino, who founded Christianity in Georgia in the 4th century, is buried.
Bodbe is not just a nunnery, it is a beautiful and peaceful place with beautifully manicured gardens and magnificent views of the surrounding area.
We will make a short city tour in Signagi and then drive to local wine maker, who has a small wine cellar and produces only traditional wine fermented in Qvevri (Underground Clay Vessels). Our host will show us his property, explain the method how he makes traditional wines and at the end of our tour, we will enjoy tasty lunch, with vegetables, barbeque and several homemade wines.
After lunch, we continue our journey to Tsinandali. The Chavchavadze princely family resided here for centuries. The tastefully furnished palace was a meeting place for the Georgian intelligentsia in the 19th century and was often visited by Russian and European writers such as Alexander Dumas and Pushkin. A tour of the house is not planned, we will only drive through the village of Tsinandali.
At the end of our wine tour in Kakheti we will visit a modern winery, where wines are produced in both, Georgian and European style. Here we will make a tour through the winery, learn what is deference between several wine fermenting method, what makes Georgian wine so unique and why is it Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
After our tour we will make wine tasting of several wines with a professional sommelier and also try famous Georgian Grappa, called Chacha.
Our day tour and wine tasting is going to an end and we will drive over Gombori Pass back to Tbilisi. - Arrival in Tbilisi at about 8 pm.
