On this day tour to cave town Uplistsikhe you have the chance to immerse yourself in history of Georgia and explore one of the most impressive cave cities of the world.

Uplistsikhe – literally meaning "The Fortress of God" is the oldest cave town of Caucasia, dated back from the 1^st century BC. It’s situated on the crossroads of important trade routes and was the main center of pagan Georgians before the country declared Christianity in 4^th century.

The whole area of Uplistsikhe was 9,5 hectares, where around 5.000 Person could live. The cave city represents a complex of halls, caves, theatres, altars, pagan temples, secret tunnels, prisons, pharmacy, wine cellars and passages-streets, most of them carved out of stone.

Last habitants of the cave city left Uplistsikhe in 19^th century and the first excavations started there already in the beginning of 20^th century.

Nowadays is Uplistsikhe listed among the historical monuments protected by UNESCO and although most of the caves of Uplistsikhe are in ruins, even people who have visited Petra in Jordan feel impressed by visiting this unique place on the crossroad of European and Asian civilizations.

Itinerary

Tour to Uplistsikhe starts around 9 am at your hotel. Our English-speaking guide and the driver will pick you up at your hotel and drive directly to Uplistsikhe.

After about 2 hours of touring and exploring the cave town, we will have a lunch break and then drive back to Tbilisi.

On the way back we will drive through birthplace of dictator Stalin and if you have interest, you can visit also his museum. Here you will see the house where he was born, as well the carriage which was used by Stalin from 1941 onwards, including his attendances at the Yalta and the Tehran Conferences.

Our tour to Uplistsikhe will end around 3 pm and we will bring you back to your hotel in Tbilisi.
