The last day of the trek from Omalo to Shatili is almost entirely downhill, but the lower we go, the warmer it gets, so we get up early and have breakfast around 7am.
The walk begins through rhododendron fields, then over the ridge with unique views of the deep gorges and valleys of the Chewsuretia region.
After about 1 hour we see on the right side the glacier mountain Tebulos with almost 4.500 m, half of which is in Georgia and the other half in Chechnya.
After a total of 2 hours of walking, we pass the Georgian border police, where we have to show our passports and the permit, and then start the descent to the Andaki River.
Around noon we reach the fortified village of Ardoti, known for its numerous fortified houses, well-hidden on a mountain slope that is difficult to access and inhabited until the end of the 20th century. In 2023, one family still lived here and we hope that more families will return to the village in the coming years, at least for the summer months.
Our walk through Tusheti from Omalo to Shatili is coming to an end. After the walk we can bathe in the clean and relatively warm Ardoti River, change our clothes, have a quiet picnic and make our way to Shatili. On the way to Shatili is the beautiful fortified village of Mutso, where we make a small photo stop.
As the route from Ardoti via Mutso to Shatili follows the dusty village road, we have decided to order the car for you and drive to Shatili. This will give you time to explore Shatili and its surroundings on foot before continuing on to the capital in the late afternoon.
